WASHINGTON (March 12) - A spacecraft whizzed past Saturn's moon Enceladus on Wednesday and through a huge geyser spurting from its south pole, collected samples of ice and gas shooting about 500 miles into space.

Three years after gigantic geysers were seen on Saturn's ice-encased moon of Enceladus, the Cassini spacecraft zipped through the phenomenon Wednesday and collected samples of ice and gas that were shooting out from them. Enceladus' geyser-like eruptions can be seen shooting into space above. But what are they emanating from?
Scientists involved in the joint U.S.-European mission are hoping observations and samples collected by the Cassini spacecraft will enable them to better understand one of the most dramatic geological features of the entire solar system.Geysers reminiscent of the famed Old Faithful at Yellowstone National Park in the United States -- only on a massive scale -- are shooting continuously off Enceladus at about 900 miles per hour (1,450 kph). It is one of about 60 moons of Saturn.Some scientists think the source of the geysers may be heated liquid water -- perhaps even an ocean -- under the frozen surface of Enceladus (pronounced en-SELL-ah-dus).The geysers may also be the source of the particles in one of Saturn's rings.Amanda Hendrix, a scientist involved in the mission from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said Cassini was passing as close as 30 miles above the surface, although not that close around the geysers.

Radar data from NASA's Magellan craft helped scientists stitch together this image of Venus. A scientist claimed that protoplanetary bodies collided head-on, merging to form the planet. He said this can explain Venus' many mysterious properties.
Hendrix said Cassini was about 120 miles above the moon's surface as it flew through the edge of a plume erupting from the south pole.Hendrix said its findings were not immediately available, but preliminary results could be made public on Thursday."We will measure ice particles and vapor, and different kinds of gases -- water vapor for sure, and we'll see what other kinds of gases are present," Hendrix said.Cassini's instruments will try to determine the density, size, composition and speed of the gas and particles shooting off the surface. In addition to ice, the plumes seem to contain carbon dioxide, methane and ammonia in small amounts.The possibility of heated water has some scientists wondering whether Enceladus might harbor conditions that could support life, even if only microbial organisms. Liquid water is thought to be a necessary ingredient for life."If there is hot, liquid water under the surface, then that does bring in the question of whether life could exist there," Hendrix said."Since we're sensing the composition of the plume, really what we're sensing is the composition of the sub-surface region -- because the gas and the particles are coming from underneath the surface," Hendrix added.Enceladus, with a diameter of 310 miles, is one of the solar system's brightest objects. Encased in ice, it reflects almost 100 percent of the sunlight that strikes it. It is one of Saturn's innermost moons.The U.S. space agency does not believe that flying through the plume posed much threat to the spacecraft because the particles are so small. Cassini often passes through regions made up of dust-size particles in its ongoing mission around Saturn.Cassini in 2005 revealed for the first time that geysers were erupting off Enceladus. The spacecraft is due to fly by Enceladus three more times in 2008.

Visitor Submitted UFO Sighting
At the end of May, 1978, while standing on the corner of 6th and Reed Streets, in South Philadelphia, facing south, talking with my Uncle Leon and neighbor Moe, both now deceased, this ball of light streaked above us less than a block away, in an eastwardly direction. The giant ball of light changed colors so fast my mind couldn't register what color I was actually seeing. The object made a swish sound. I only saw it for about 5 seconds because the houses surrounding where I was standing are 3 stories high and blocked my view that is how low the object was soaring. It was reported in the Philadelphia Inquirer the next day that the ball of light landed about 50 miles away, in the Atlantic Ocean about 1 mile from Atlantic City's Resorts International, which coincidentally had their Grand Opening one or two days before this UFO encounter, I believe.

Brazil General: UFO Disclosure Needed Now
Last week, this newsletter reported that there had been a meeting at the UN about possible UFO disclosure in the near term. But then the only named source for this information turned out not to have had the credentials necessary to attend such a meeting, so Unknowncountry.com ran a story saying that there was no reliable way to tell whether or not the meeting even happened.
Now, however, leading Brazilian UFO Researcher A.J. Gaevard has announced that Brazilian Air Force Brigadier Jose Carlos Pereira, one of the most distinguished military officers in Brazil, has said in the Brazilian UFO Magazine that disclosure must come soon.
Brigadier Pereira has an impressive military record. He flew all sorts of aircraft all over the world for 40 years and was a top authority in the Brazilian Air Force during the last two decades. Recently he served as General Commander of Comdabra, The Brazilian Airspace Defense Command and then President of Infraero - Brazilian Airports Infrastructure Company. He has a direct line with the president Lula da Silva. Brigadier Pereira was once considered the man who had the key to the safe the UFO secrets were kept in.
If so, maybe he will soon be telling us what those secrets were.

Those Detention Centers: They're Real
The internet has been abuzz with rumors for years that the government is building ominous detention centers, while at the same time the Bush Administration has quietly passed legislation that would allow the president to have dictatorial powers, should he ever wish to use them.
Since 9/11, and seemingly without the notice of most Americans, the federal government has assumed the authority to institute martial law, arrest a wide swath of dissidents (citizen and noncitizen alike), and detain people without legal or constitutional recourse in the event of "an emergency influx of immigrants in the U.S., or to support the rapid development of new programs."
Beginning in 1999, the government has entered into a series of single-bid contracts with Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg, Brown and Root (KBR) to build detention camps at undisclosed locations within the United States. The government has also contracted with several companies to build thousands of railcars, some reportedly equipped with shackles, ostensibly to transport detainees. According to diplomat and author Peter Dale Scott, the KBR contract is part of a Homeland Security plan titled ENDGAME, which sets as its goal the removal of "all removable aliens" and "potential terrorists."
Much of this is understandable, but not that strange phrase, "the rapid development of new programs."
If we are giving the government such broad powers, we have a right to expect an explanation of how they might be used.
What "new programs," and why would "rapid development" call for detention centers?
